How much should you tip?
- Restaurants: 18–20% is standard in the US; 15% for buffet or counter service.
- Bars: $1–2 per drink, or 18–20% of the tab.
- Delivery: 15–20%, with a $3–5 minimum.
- Exceptional service: 25%+ says thank you clearly.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Convention is pre-tax. Most people tip on the post-tax total out of convenience — the difference is small either way.
