How overtime works
Under federal law (FLSA), non-exempt employees earn 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states add daily overtime: California requires 1.5× after 8 hours in a day and 2× after 12 hours; Alaska and Nevada require 1.5× after 8 daily hours.
Who is exempt?
Salaried executive, administrative, and professional employees earning above the federal threshold ($844/week as of 2024 rules, check current DOL figures) may be exempt. When in doubt, check with your state's labor department.
