Grade point values (4.0 scale)
- A = 4.0, A− = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7
- D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0
Weighted vs unweighted GPA
Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 — every class counts equally. Weighted GPA adds +1.0 for Honors/AP/IB classes, so it can exceed 4.0. Colleges often recalculate your GPA with their own formula, so treat either number as an estimate.
What is a good GPA?
Nationally, a 3.0 is a B average. Competitive colleges typically look for 3.5+, highly selective schools 3.8+.
How is GPA actually calculated?
Each grade converts to grade points, multiplied by course credits, summed, then divided by total credits.
